A puppy |
Have you been asking yourself this
question – “how much should i feed my dog or puppy”? Which dog breed type of
puppies do you have? Breeds with smaller puppies or those with large puppies? Do
you feed them the every day ordinary meal with at least some beef, etc? It may
seem simple but how much to feed a puppy or your dog, really isn't. Honestly,
you’re not alone. Many of us take our puppy's feeding for granted. Feed your
puppy the wrong diet in the right portion and vice versa and they may be
crippled with one disease or another for life. Here are a couple of useful but
basic tips that every pet owner should know. However, if you require deeper
knowledge and real action in how much to feed a puppy or a dog, go here - How to feed your dog . You would learn exactly
what to do in any situation.
Breast Feeding
First of all, it’s absolutely
important that you allow breast feeding for at least the first 5 weeks. It’s
considered safe to introduce small amounts of food in the right portion after
this period, though the eventual weaning should occur around 8 weeks. Today,
it’s common scientific knowledge that human breast feeding is the best for
newly born babies. This goes to say that nature has its own ways. This also
applies to all animals including puppies. Breast feeding offers the best
foundational nutrition like proteins for growth and calcium for strong bone
formation, in a balanced proportion for all living things including puppies. It
goes without saying that if you are going to get a puppy, then you should make
sure it’s been weaned off breast feeding or you might have to strain to find
the right nutritional balance to feed it. There’s nothing like natural food.
LARGER PUPPIES VS SMALLER PUPPIES
It’s important to note that dog breeds with smaller puppies are fed differently from those with larger puppies. Smaller puppies usually require more protein and calcium than larger puppies. This can be a little elusive. Assuming you have both small puppy and large puppy breeds that were born on the same day, the temptation would be to assume that they would mature at the same time so you’re likely to feed them in like manner but that shouldn't be the case. Simply put, dog breeds with smaller puppies usually mature 12 months earlier than dog breeds with larger puppies. It is therefore essential to note the distinction. It’s safe to use the free feeding method for dogs with smaller breed puppies; the free method being, allowing them to have as much fill as they can. They would usually adapt to any food given them. However, with larger breed puppies, it’s important to control the portion of food given them since they would take longer to reach maturity. It is therefore essential to feed them with the right amount of food and nutrients because most of these breeds are prone to bone diseases. Too much protein or calcium or less of both can cripple your dog for life therefore you need a balance.
