2 Simple Techniques To Stop Your Dog From Dragging You Around On A Leash

Dog pulling on the leash

You enjoy the walks with your dog but you’re scared that, if care is not taken, one day, it might break from the leash and probably engage in a nasty fight with another dog; it’s been pulling on the leash and dragging you around. By the way, if you want to know how to make your dog meet other dogs peacefully whilst taking it for a walk, read this How To make Your Dog Meet Other Dogs Without A Fight. Maybe you have a fierce breed which is not easily controllable. Why is this happening and how can you solve it?

Before I break it down, it’s important to know that, the process of altering such a behaviour can take time to teach since we’re dealing with animals here. However, it’s also possible to fix this problem in as short as 5 minutes.

Reasons

1.    The reason why this is happening in the first place is that, you did not learn the 5 golden rules of becoming the pack leader. This simply means that, at the beginning of training your dog, you did not establish yourself as the leader so it has grabbed that spot. This is a whole topic on its own which The Online Dog Trainer breaks it down into details for you on his site. I recommend you click here The 5 Golden Rules Of The Effective Pack Leader and visit the site to get the details.

2.    Another reason could be that it simply wants to attend to natures call, maybe sniff around and pee, who knows. I suspect most dog owners have a hang on this one, though it can be difficult to tell sometimes.

Solutions

1.    If your dog gets excited when it sees you with the leash in hand getting ready for a walk, do not condone its behavior by putting on the leash. Halt, turn and move away ignoring it, or better still drop the leash where it can see it. Wait until it’s calm and attempt putting the leash on. If it gets excited again, don’t do it. Repeat this sequence until it’s calm before putting on the leash. You need to repeat this everyday as long as the behavior of excitement continues. It would take some time but it would eventually understand the message you’re trying to convey.

2.    You have tried this but it still pulls ahead when you start the walk? No worries! Just when you start the walk, watch the direction it pulls you and go the opposite direction. If it pulls you to the right, change direction and move towards the left. You should do this immediately the walk starts and don’t wait for it to pull far ahead. Repeat this sequence until it gets the message you’re trying to convey. It would eventually get it and you would have your dog walking by your side obediently, instead of dragging you around and possibly injury your shoulders. Watch a short demonstration of this process in action from the expect online dog trainer in this video below.

This is just the basic approach but there is more to learn from the expert on his site The Online Dog Trainer. He would show you what devices to use in your walk routines. And oh, did I mention that, there’s actually a 30mins audio on the site giving you a step by step guide which you can listen to as you walk your dog.
